Jazz Piano Group Classes

  • Approach and Curriculum

    Each week’s class is based on a tune which we use as a base to explore different aspects ranging from voicings, melodic delivery, improvisation, language and harmony.

    What you can expect to learn:

    Level 1-2: Classic jazz piano voicings (shells, rootless); Jazz harmony (‘7’ chords); Scales (pentatonic, blues, mixolydian); Application of scales and different techniques to improvisation; Playing by ear; Swing rhythm; Transcribing solos

    Level 2-3: Bebop melodies; Two-handed voicings (block chords, drop 2), More jazz harmony; Other important scales; Walking bass; Solo piano; Other grooves

    Each class is capped at 4 students. Observers are welcome. Recommended experience: Grade 5 piano or equivalent

    1) Level 1: Monday 730-845pm
    2) Level 1: Thursday 1030-1145am
    3) Level 2: Saturday 10-1115am
    4) Level 2: Saturday 1115-1230pm
    5) Level 3: Sunday 10-1115am

    Fees: $650/cycle (10 classes); $75/session (Drop-in); $45/session (Observers)
    Location: Outram, near SGH

    Course materials include a copy of the ‘Jazz Piano Survival Handbook’, a proprietary companion guidebook ($15) written and designed by Amanda Lee. The book is also available to 1-1 students.

If you prefer 1-1 guidance, Amanda offers jazz piano lessons in-person and online.

Regular weekly / fortnightly lessons: $110-125/h (package of four classes). Ad-hoc lessons: $150/h

Jazz Dance

Amanda is a senior teacher with Jazz Inc and teaches lindy hop, authentic solo jazz and charleston classes.

She also teaches and performs for private parties and events.
